Intervista di Dores Sacquegna con l'artista americana Dawn Daisley

IL PAESAGGIO TRA FIGURAZIONE E ASTRAZIONE NELLE OPERE DI DAWN DAISLEY

Dawn Daisley è una artista che lavora principalmente con le tecniche tradizionali e sperimentali dell'incisione. Incide, taglia, incolla, sovrappone strati di materiali, unisce l’encausto all’olio e si è inventata un universo intricato e fiabesco in cui il paesaggio apre all’idea di un “fuori” assoluto, nel rapporto tra uomo e natura.

Chi è Dawn Daisley e quando hai capito che l’arte era la tua strada? 

Sono cresciuta sulla costa meridionale di Long Island e osservando gli elementi naturali mi sono resa conto del movimento transitorio della vita. Metamorfosi, stagioni mutevoli, maree oceaniche e sabbie mutevoli, ispirano e si riformano con bellezza e dignità. L'arte mi ha trovato e mi ha messo su questa strada.

Nelle tue opere la natura torna ad essere riconosciuta come componente istintiva ed emozionale dell’animo umano. Come si colloca questa tendenza stilistica verso l’autenticità e l’armonia in un ambiente globale disomogeneo e saturo di stimoli contraddittori? 

Aspiro a creare momenti o luoghi magici in cui si possa trovare tregua nella propria immaginazione.

Oltre alle opere più figurative, c’è una parte della tua produzione che si spinge all’astrazione. Penso ai frammenti del dittico in mostra dal titolo Morning Magic o River Valley. Qui il paesaggio scompare nel frammento, nell’impronta, nella pura materia, nelle lunghe stratificazioni temporali. Cosa vuoi trasmettere con le tue opere e cosa fai nel quotidiano per la salvaguardia dell’ambiente?  

Faccio quello che posso fare ogni giorno. Mi occupo di giardini locali in Florida e faccio volontariato per organizzazioni di uccelli e volatili.

Colpisce nelle tue opere il cromatismo pulito, la levità e la freschezza del tratto… ogni opera racconta porzioni di luoghi sconosciuti. E’ per te un modo di dispersione del sé per ritrovare un sé nella natura ancora più profondo?

Vedo la bellezza e i momenti magici nella banalità. La semplice erba che soffia dolcemente nel vento, il sole o l'ombra che danzano sul suolo della foresta, i colori che cambiano all'alba o al tramonto sull'acqua... infinite opportunità di scoperta. E poi cerco di esprimere quel momento cercando di fermare il tempo attraverso le me opere. 

Se dovessi tornare indietro nel tempo, in quale periodo della storia ti immagineresti di vivere? 

Domanda interessante, non ci ho mai pensato. Penso che si tratti di un'epoca primitiva o del futuro.

Progetti futuri? 

Sto avviando una piccola impresa, creando classi di artisti a rotazione come catalizzatori comunitari per laboratori e programmi per artisti all'interno delle comunità. St. Petersburg, nella contea di Pinellas, in Florida, ha una fiorente comunità artistica e sostiene le arti e l'educazione con un numero illimitato di luoghi e risorse disponibili. L'obiettivo è quello di coinvolgere le comunità per progetti di "apprendimento attivo". Il nome sarà "Esplorazioni artistiche" e noi ci presenteremo come "esploratori" in vari luoghi creativi locali.

DAWN DAISLEY è una artista americana che vive in Florida. Ha una formazione artistica ampia grazie a numerosi studi nel campo delle Arti Grafiche e della Comunicazione, che unite ad anni di esperienza professionale, conferisce al suo lavoro di artista una prospettiva unica. La sua passione è la grafica d’arte sperimentale che insegna come professore aggiunto all'Eckerd College.  Dawn ha partecipato a numerose mostre in Europa e in Usa, tra cui le recenti presso la Fundacao Tharrats d’Art Grafic di Barcellona, il Creede Art Council in Colorado, ottenendo premi e onorificenze; tra le ultime residenze, si segnala Baroque Blue 2023 con Primo Piano LivinGallery. Le sue opere sono esposte nella mostra      "The diary of a dreamer: Longitudini, Latitudini ed eredità delle donne" a cura di Dores Sacquegna, presso la Fondazione Palmieri a Lecce dal 24 Febbraio all'8 Marzo 2024.

Interview by Dores Sacquegna with the American artist Dawn Daisley

THE LANDSCAPE BETWEEN FIGURATION AND ABSTRACTION IN THE WORKS BY DAWN DAISLEY

Dawn Daisley is an artist who works primarily with traditional and experimental printmaking techniques. Like a Carthusian goldsmith, she etches, cuts, glues superimpose layers of materials, combines encaustic with oil, and she has invented an intricate, fairy-tale universe in which the landscape opens to the idea of an absolute "outside" in the relationship between man and nature.

Who is Dawn Daisley and when did you realize that art was your path? 

I grew up on the south shore of Long Island and observing natural elements made me aware of the transitory motion of life. Metamorphous, changing seasons, ocean tides and shifting sands inspire and reform with beauty and dignity. Art found me and placed me on that path.

In your works, nature returns to be recognized as an instinctive and emotional component of the human soul. How does this stylistic tendency toward authenticity and harmony fit into an uneven global environment saturated with contradictory stimuli? 

I aspire to create magical moments or places where one can find respite within their imagination.

 In addition to the more figurative works, there is a part of your production that pushes into abstraction. I think of the fragments of the diptych in the exhibition entitled Morning Magic or River Valley. Here the landscape disappears in the fragment, in the imprint, in the pure matter, in the long layers of time. What do you want to convey with your works and what do you do daily to protect the environment?  

I do what I can do every day. I work on local gardens in Florida and volunteer for bird and fowl organizations.

What is striking in your works is the clean coloring, the levity, and the freshness of the stroke... each work tells portions of unknown places. Is it a way for you to disperse yourself and to find an even deeper Self in nature?

I see beauty and magical moments in the mundane. The simple grass blowing gently in the wind, the sun or shadow dancing on forest floor, when colors change at sunrise and sunset on the water.. infinite opportunities for discovery. And then expressing that present moment but where time seems to have stopped.

If you had to go back in time, what period of art history would you imagine yourself living in?

 Interesting question, I never thought about this. I think either primitive or the future.

Do you have any future plans?

I am starting a small business by Creating Rotating Artist Classes as Community Catalysts for  artists workshop and programs within communities. St. Petersburg, in Pinellas County Florida, has a thriving artistic community and supports arts and education with an unlimited venues and resources available. The goal is to engage communities for "Active Learning" projects. The name will be "Artastic Explorations," and we will pop up as “Explorers” to various creative local venues.

DAWN DAISLEY is an American artist living in Florida. She has a broad artistic background through numerous studies in Graphic Arts and Communication, which combined with years of printmaking professional experience, gives her work as an artist a unique perspective. Her passion is experimental printmaking, which she teaches as an adjunct professor at Eckerd College. Dawn has participated in numerous exhibitions in Europe and the US, including recent ones at Fundaçao Tharrats d'Art Grafic in Barcelona, the Creede Art Council in Colorado, earning awards and honours; recent residencies include 2023 Baroque Blue  with Primo Piano LivinGallery. Her works are exhibited in the exhibition "The Diary of A Dreamer: longitudes, latitudes and women's legacy" curated by Dores Sacquegna, at the Palmieri Foundation in Lecce from 24 February to 8 March 2024.
