ARTE E SCIENZA: UN BINOMIO VINCENTE NELLE OPERE DI SARA MCKENZIE

Sara McKenzie è stata impegnata nella biotecnologia per oltre trenta anni.  Come artista, ha utilizzato tutti i tipi di media (tessuto, fibra, vetro, carta, argilla, pittura), esplorando forma e funzione, rappresentazione e astrazione.

La tua formazione è stata scientifica, sei stata impegnata per più di trenta anni nel campo della biotecnologia. Quando hai sentito l’esigenza di esprimerti attraverso l’arte?  

Mi sono espressa in modo artistico per tutta la vita, attraverso la musica, la danza e le arti visive. Solo di recente, da quando mi sono ritirata dal mondo delle biotecnologie, mi sono dedicata a una seria esplorazione della pittura come modalità di espressione artistica.

E cosa pensi riguardo il tema dell’incontro tra arte e scienza?

Fondamentalmente, l'arte è una forma di espressione personale, mentre la scienza è una forma di conoscenza. Il punto di intersezione, per me, è che entrambi sono tentativi di vedere realmente il mondo, di capire ciò che si vede e di comunicare questa comprensione. Un altro filo conduttore per me è il mio processo di creazione artistica e il processo del metodo scientifico. In entrambi i casi, faccio un passo nel processo e poi lascio andare il risultato.  Piuttosto che forzare un'immagine visiva preordinata, aspetto di vedere cosa si evolve nel mio dipinto e solo allora faccio il passo successivo, rispondendo ai "dati" del dipinto che ho davanti.

Ci sono artisti che partono da sé stessi per parlare d’altro, e artisti che partono da altro per poi parlare di sé stessi. C’è qualcosa di personale nella serie Pathways e in particolare delle tre opere in mostra dal titolo Journey Beneath, Through and Over e The road less traveled?

Adoro questa descrizione!  Io considero la seconda: Parto da qualcos'altro e poi parlo di me.  La serie Pathways rappresenta visivamente il modo in cui pianifichiamo la nostra vita (la griglia di fondo), ma ci imbattiamo in ogni sorta di esperienza che ci fa prendere molte altre strade (i motivi organici e serpeggianti in cima).  I tre dipinti in mostra rappresentano vari aspetti del modo in cui si svolgono le nostre vite e di come esploriamo le nostre esperienze.  "The Road Less Travelled" è un'esplorazione di Madre Natura e del modo in cui ci relazioniamo con lei.  "Journey Beneath" parla del nostro mondo interiore e di ciò che si nasconde sotto i nostri comportamenti.  Infine, "Through and Over" fa il passo successivo e aggiunge una nuova serie di piani alla nostra esperienza vissuta.

Hai detto che hai utilizzato vari media artistici, applicando lo stesso metodo scientifico di esplorazione della materia tra rappresentazione e astrazione.  Secondo te l’arte cosa deve comunicare nel XXI secolo?

Credo che l'arte debba comunicare la nostra comunanza di essere umani ed esprimere la condizione umana, qualunque cosa significhi per il singolo artista.

Se dovessi fare un viaggio nel tempo, quali artisti ti piacerebbe incontrare?

Mi piacerebbe incontrare Wassily Kandinsky e Hilma af Klimt!  Kandinsky è stato considerato il padre dell'astrazione fino a quando l'opera di Klimt non è stata scoperta e studiata a fondo.  Mi piacerebbe parlare con loro di ciò che ha spinto la loro arte a evolversi in un modo mai visto prima.

Progetti futuri?

Di certo ho intenzione di continuare a dipingere!  Sento che c'è ancora molto da esplorare nella serie Pathways.  Sto anche iniziando a cercare una rappresentanza in galleria e a cercare modi per interagire con altri artisti.

SARA MCKENZIE è una artista americana nata in Nebraska nel 1957, vive ed opera a Santa Fe nel New Mexico. La sua formazione è stata scientifica e ha trascorso più di trenta anni nell'area di Boston nel Massachusetts, impegnata nella biotecnologia. Ha partecipato a diverse mostre per lo più in USA tra cui le recenti presso l’Hispanic Arts Gallery in Albuquerque a Santa Fe.

ART AND SCIENCE: A WINNING COMBINATION IN THE WORKS BY SARA MCKENZIE

Sara McKenzie has been engaged in biotechnology for over thirty years.  As an artist, she has used all kinds of media (fabric, fiber, glass, paper, clay, painting), exploring form and function, representation and abstraction.

Your background was scientific: you have been involved in the field of biotechnology for more than thirty years. When did you feel the need to express yourself through art?

I have expressed myself in an artistic way my entire life, through music, dance and the visual arts. It is only recently, since I retired from the world of biotechnology, that I have devoted myself to a serious exploration of painting as a mode of artistic expression.

And what do you think about the theme of the encounter between art and science?

At the most fundamental, Art is a form of personal expression, while Science is a form of gaining knowledge. Where they intersect, for me, is that they both are attempts to really see the world, understand what is being seen, and then communicate that understanding. Another common thread for me personally, is my process of making art and the process of the scientific method. In both instances, I take a step in the process and then let go of the outcome.  Rather than force a pre-ordained visual image, I wait to see what evolves in my painting, and only then do I take the next step, responding to the “data” in the painting before me.

There are artists who start from themselves to talk about something else, and artists who start from something else and then talk about themselves. Is there something personal about the Pathways series and particularly about the three works in the exhibition titled Journey Beneath, Through and Over and The road less traveled?

I love that description!  I would consider myself to be the latter: I start from something else and then talk about myself.  The Pathways series visually represents how we plan our lives (the underlying grid) but are met with all manner of experiences that send our lives on many other paths (the organic, meandering patterns on top). 
The three paintings in the exhibition represent various aspects of how our lives unfold, and how we explore our own experiences.  “The Road Less Travelled” is an exploration of Mother Nature, and how we relate to her.  “Journey Beneath” is about our internal worlds and visiting what lies beneath our behaviors.  Finally, “Through and Over” takes the next step, and adds a new set of plans on top of our lived experience.

You said you used various artistic media, applying the same scientific method of exploring matter between representation and abstraction.  What do you think art should communicate in the 21st century?

I believe that art should communicate our commonality in being human and express the human condition, whatever that means to the individual artist.

If you were to take a trip back in time, which artists would you like to meet?

I would love to meet Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klimt!  Kandinsky was considered the father of abstraction until Klimt’s work was discovered and fully studied.  I would love to talk to them about what compelled their art to evolve in a way that had never been seen before.

Do you have any future plans?

I certainly plan to keep painting!  I feel there is a lot more to explore in the Pathways series.  I am also starting to look for gallery representation and for ways to interact with other artists.

SARA MCKENZIE is an American artist born in Nebraska in 1957, living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her background was in science, and she spent more than thirty years in the Boston area of Massachusetts engaged in biotechnology.  She has participated in several exhibitions mostly in the USA including recent ones at the Hispanic Arts Gallery in Albuquerque in Santa Fe.
