LA MEMORIA PERDUTA NELLE OPERE DI NANCY BARWELL

Le sue opere nascono principalmente dall’osservazione del paesaggio. Queste memorie di paesaggi urbani, siti naturali, identità, ombre, vengono poi elaborati con vari medium differenti come la fotografia, l’installazione, la video arte e la pittura.

Tu sei un artista multidisciplinare che lavora con diversi media e temi. Quando è nato il desiderio di produrre arte e poi arte digitale?

Ho iniziato a dipingere seriamente intorno al 1980/81. Ho iniziato a fare arte digitale nel 2002, con il tema "Circuiti" ho realizzato un'installazione con schede madri di computer.

Oltre alle arti plastiche, tu ha una formazione in studi medici, storia dell'arte e psicoanalisi. Sebbene si tratti di un terreno comune tra creatività, espressione di emozioni e trasformazione, ci sono delle somiglianze secondo te tra psicologia e arte? 
 

All'inizio del mio dottorato in arte plastica, ho sviluppato le analogie tra il lavoro dei sogni - come descritto da Freud - e la creazione artistica.  Freud ha fatto un parallelo tra psicologia e archeologia. Creò la nozione di "psicologia del profondo". Ho notato le stesse procedure quando creo un dipinto o un'altra opera d'arte.

Insieme a tuo marito Philip hai realizzato film e testimonianze sulla storia dell'Algeria dal 1954 a oggi. Cosa vi ha spinto a fare questa ricerca?

Innanzitutto sono nata in Algeria e sono rimasta molto legata a questo Paese e alla sua gente.
Nel luglio 2011 siamo andati al Festival del Teatro di Avignone e abbiamo assistito a due spettacoli teatrali sulla guerra d'indipendenza. Io e Philip siamo rimasti così scossi che abbiamo sentito la necessità di "fare qualcosa", cioè di approfondire il riconoscimento reciproco dei due Paesi. Questo lavoro è ancora in corso.
 

Il ciclo pittorico intitolato Washing è composto da più di dieci opere, due delle quali sono presenti in
mostra. Il progetto sembra giocare sulla memoria perduta, su luoghi lontani. Se potessi tornare
indietro nel tempo, quali artisti vorresti incontrare?

Il soggetto di Washing è stato ispirato dai miei ricordi d'infanzia, quando giocavo a "nascondino" tra le lenzuola che si asciugavano al sole  nel cortile di casa mia.
Tornando indietro nel tempo, sarei molto onorato di essere un topolino nello studio dei seguenti artisti: Rembrant, Piero della Francesca, Caravaggio, Goya, Gaspard Friedfrich, Van Gogh, Munch e Bacon.

L'arte multimediale e digitale è una rappresentazione effimera e surreale del mondo. Considerando la "liquidità" della nostra epoca, quali sono, se ci sono, i limiti dell'artista?
 

Ogni epoca porta con sé la sua originalità specifica ed estende i limiti delle possibilità artistiche.
 

NANCY BARWELL è una artista franco-algerina che vive in Francia. Ha una formazione di studi in medicina, psicoanalisi, arti plastiche e storia dell’arte. Insieme al marito Philip, ha realizzato film e testimonianze sulla storia dell’Algeria dal 1954 ad oggi. La sua attività espositiva professionale inizia nel 1994 e tra i recenti progetti anche la residenza Baroque Blue 2022 con Primo Piano.

LOST MEMORY IN THE WORKS BY NANCY BARWELL

Her works are mainly born from the observation of the landscape. These memories of urban landscapes, natural sites, identities, and shadows are then processed with various different mediums such as photography, installation, video art, and painting.

You are a multidisciplinary artist working with different media and themes. When did the desire to produce art and then digital art begin?

I started painting seriously around 1980/81. I started making digital art in 2002, with the theme "Circuits" I made an installation with computer motherboards.

In addition to the plastic arts, you have a background in medical studies, art history and psychoanalysis. Although it is a common ground between creativity, expression of emotions and transformation, are there similarities in your opinion between psychology and art? 
 

At the beginning of my doctorate in plastic art, I developed the similarities between dream work-as described by Freud-and artistic creation.  Freud drew parallels between psychology and archaeology. He created the notion of "depth psychology." I have noticed the same procedures when creating a painting or other artwork.

Together with your husband Philip, you have made films and testimonies on the history of Algeria from 1954 to the present. What prompted you to do this research?

First of all, I was born in Algeria and have remained very attached to this country and its people.
In July 2011, we went to the Avignon Theater Festival and saw two plays about the war of independence. Philip and I were so shaken that we felt the need to "do something," that is, to deepen the mutual recognition of the two countries. This work is still in progress.

The painting cycle entitled Washing consists of more than ten works, two of which are featured in the
exhibition. The project seems to play on lost memory, on distant places. If you could go back in time, which artists would you want to meet?

The subject of Washing was inspired by my childhood memories of playing "hide and seek" among the sheets drying in the sun in my backyard. Going back in time, I would be very honored to be a mouse in the studio of the following artists: Rembrant, Piero della Francesca, Caravaggio, Goya, Gaspard Friedfrich, Van Gogh, Munch, and Bacon.

Multimedia and digital art is an ephemeral and surreal representation of the world. Considering the "liquidity" of our age, what, if any, are the limits of the artist?
 

Each era brings with it its own specific originality and extends the limits of artistic possibilities.

NANCY BARWELL is a French-Algerian artist living in France. She has a background of studies in medicine, psychoanalysis, plastic arts and art history. Together with her husband Philip, she has made films and accounts of Algerian history from 1954 to the present. Her professional exhibition work began in 1994 and recent projects include the Baroque Blue 2022 art residency with Primo Piano.
